Meet Toby Carr

Leading theorbo and lute player  Toby Carr is known as one of the most versatile and engaging performers working with historical plucked instruments today. He began his studies in classical guitar at Trinity Laban, where he was first introduced to the lute, before going on to complete a postgraduate degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has since returned to the Guildhall as a professor.

Carr has observed that "when you play a quiet instrument, you realise how loud the world really is." It is this quality of deep listening that sits at the heart of his performing life, dedicating much of his career to presenting early music to new audiences in fresh and compelling ways.

He performs regularly as a soloist, continuo player, accompanist and chamber musician and has appeared with many of the principal period instrument ensembles in the UK, including the Academy of Ancient Music, the English Concert, La Nuova Musica and the Dunedin Consort, as well as with the Royal Ballet, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and English Touring Opera.
