Lie Down and Listen returns to York, with music performed by leading cellist Colin Alexander, who brings the grounding simplicity of the deep C string, a sound that reconnects, roots and restores.
You're welcomed to feel the deep and powerful resonance of the cello in the stunning and very unique space of St Margaret's Church in York.
You won’t just hear the music, you’ll feel it.

What to expect:
In the peaceful surroundings of the historic St Margaret's in York, you'll feel the deep and powerful resonance of the cello as leading cellist Colin Alexander joins founder Christina McMaster for a deeply relaxing and uplifting sound healing experience.
Christina will guide you through the session as Colin performs Bach cello suites to put a smile on your face and joy in your heart, alongside the beautiful sounds of Tibetan bowls and gongs.
The simplicity of the deep C string on the cello is like a grounding call to reconnect. You'll feel rooted and relaxed, ready to absorb the music around you. This experience also features Colin's own piece, which will gently guide you into a rhythmic, trance-like state of calm and restoration.

Meet leading cellist and composer:
Colin Alexander

Colin Alexander is a cellist and composer working across a range of disciplines and traditions. Whilst collaborating with artists such as Kit Downes, Héloïse Werner, Abel Selaocoe, Max Baillie, Alice Zawadzki, Sean Shibe and Misha Mullov-Abbado, Colin also performs with a variety of ensembles such as 12 Ensemble, LSO Ensemble for composers, Phaedra Ensemble and United Strings of Europe.
Alongside his performing schedule, he has written new works for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Contemporary Orchestra, Contrechamps, The Mercury Quartet, Hyper Duo, Le Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain and Bush Theatre, London. He features on a variety of recordings on Delphian Records, Nonclassical, Accidental Records and October House Records.
Recent projects have included a new electro-acoustic commission for flamenco dancer, live cello and electronics for Resolution Festival 2025, a world premiere at London’s Wigmore Hall and a series of performances of his own solo cello suites - works described by Fiona Maddocks in The Observer as “quixotic and otherworldly, and strongly recommended”.
Colin is also a founding member of miré with Kit Downes (organ) and Héloïse Werner (voice) – a trio where three distinct musical minds collide, entangle, melt and reform. Their debut EP Revelries was released in January 2026 on Delphian Records

Meet Pianist/Founder Christina McMaster
Christina McMaster is a pianist, composer and founder of Lie Down & Listen – a truly creative spirit fascinated by deep listening and sound. She has performed at numerous festivals U.K and worldwide, featured on BBC Radio 4, Radio 3, Classic FM.
She attended the Purcell School and was selected as a young artist in residence at St John’s Smith square. She studied with Joanna MacGregor at The Royal Academy of Music and was later appointed an Associate. She has been a mentor for Geneva International Music Competition, UNESCO Day of the Girl, and given talks at Universities in the U.K and U.S, including at Cambridge and Oxford Universities. Christina has collaborated with numerous visual artists, leading composers and artists - including composers Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, Freya Waley-Cohen, Folk music legend Peggy Seeger and electronic artist Tom Middleton.

She was a Visiting Associate at Kings College in London, developing the ‘Sound Mind’ project with Dr Sally Marlow which evolved into Lie down & Listen. In April 2023, Christina premiered her composition ‘Inner Temple’ inspired by 12th Century Priestess Hildegard Von Bingen. In December 2024, she premiered another of her compositions - ‘Sound Journey to Mars’ - created for Artist Luke Jerram’s ‘Mars’ installation at the Painted Hall in London. Christina has a particular interest in 20th Century French Music – and spent many summers studying in Aix-en-Provence with Bernard Flavigny.
